What is "Sumo"?

Sumo (sumo wrestling) is a professional and competitive wrestling sport where 2 rikishi (sumo wrestler) attempt to force another into touching the ground anything other than soles of feet, or out of 4.5 meter (177 inch) diameter ring.

Origin of "Sumo".

It is a sport originated in Japan as practiced professionally. Sumo was originally a ritual to forecast good harvest of crops sometime around 700AD. The ritual had been continued as court event for 300 years more and inherited to following generations to compete strength of warriors.

In 15th century, Japan was in warring state of period when samurai ruled countries. Especially at the time, sumo was one of the major measurement to recruit warriors.

Sumo became more common and popular in 17th century. In terms of war, Japan was peaceful at the time. And sumo became entertainment for people and professionalism in sumo has been started.

In 1909, sumo was designated the national sport of Japan.

There are 6 seasons for sumo events that opened in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka. If you are interested going to sumo events and watching bouts, check Japan Sumo Association's official web.

There are 6 tournaments every year.

  • January Tournament (Hatsu Basho): Tokyo

  • March Tournament (Haru Basho): Osaka

  • May Tournament (Natsu Basho): Tokyo

  • July Tournament (Nagoya Basho): Nagoya

  • September Tournament (Aki Basho): Tokyo

  • November Tournament (Kyushu Basho): Fukuoka

It is an organization of Sumo, AKA Japan Sumo Association.
