Private railway discounts in Japan


Private railways in Japan.

Apart from JR (Japan Railways), there are dozens of private companies operate in Japan. Some of private railways consist of single line. Priority of traveling among major cities would be convenience but If you are planning to travel somewhere quite and isolated, private companies is the one you want to go for.

Plus, some private railways such as Keisei and Keikyu, they provide fast and cheap train from Narita and Haneda airport.

I made a list of such private railway companies as well as their discount information for your reference:

(The order of companies are placed for their lengths.)

Kanto Area:

Tobu (approx. 460 km or 286 mile)

Preferred for: "Nikko" and "Kawagoe".

Seibu (approx. 180 km or 112 mile)

Preferred for: "Chichibu" and "Kawagoe".

Odakyu (approx. 120 km or 74 mile)

Preferred for: "Kanagawa" and "Hakone".

Click on link in below for flat-rate pass. It says "free-pass" but not, obviously.

With their "free-pass" (finger quoted), you get a discount on Onsen and other facilities.

Tokyu (approx. 100 km or 62 mile)

Preferred for: "Yokohama".

Keisei (approx. 100 km or 62 mile)

Preferred for: "Narita airport".

Their Skyliner connects Ueno station and Narita airport for just 36 minutes. Use it with their discount.

Keikyu (approx. 90 km or 56 mile)

Preffered for: "Haneda airport".

They operates rapid train and it connects Shinagawa station and Haneda airport for just 14 minutes. Discount link in below.

Keio (approx. 80 km or 50 mile)

Preferred for: "Takaosan (Mt. Takao)".

They operates lines in west of central Tokyo. They offer discount for 1day Keio train pass and amusement parks. (Yomiuri land, Tokyo Summerland, and Sanrio Puroland.) Check below.

 

Chubu Area.

Meitetsu (approx. 500 km or 310 mile)

Preferred for: "Inuyama" and "Chubu Centrair International Airport".

Kinki Area.

Kintetsu (approx. 570 km or 354 mile)

This is the largest company as private railways, which operates in Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Ise and Nagoya.

Their 1day travel pass costs ¥1,500 (approx. $13) and enables you to travel Kyoto, Osaka and Nara.

Nankai (approx. 170 km or 105 mile)

Preferred for: "Kansai airpot" and "Koyasan (Mt. Koya)".

Hankyu (approx. 150 km or 93 mile)

Preferred for: "Kobe chinatown", "HEP FIVE" and "Arashiyama (Mt. Arashi)".

Keihan (approx. 90 km or 56 mile)

Preferred for: "all around Kyoto".

Hanshin (approx 50 km or 31 mile)

Preferred for: between "Osaka" and "Kobe".

Nishitetsu (approx. 120km or 74 mile)

Preferred for: "Dazaifu".
