Flat-rate train tickets in Japan
Japan Rail Pass.
This is flat-rate rail pass of JR (Japan Railways), which can be used for all JR network throughout Japan. What amazing about this pass is you can use it for Sinkansen (bullet train) except for Nozomi and Mizuho Shinkansen.
You can choose its validity period from 7, 14, and 21 days.
There are 2 types of pass.
Green Pass (¥44,000 or $384 for 7 days pass). This allows you to board on superior class; green cars.
Ordinary Pass (¥33,000 or $288 for 7 days pass). This applies to economy class only.
*The price may change over years.
If you are traveling as a couple of groups, the green pass is recommended because green cars are less likely to be full.
Important:
1. This pass must be booked BEFORE your trip to Japan.
2. Buy an exchange ticket from JR sales agents outside Japan.

3. Make sure that your passport is stamped with "Temporary Visitor" when you enter Japan.
4. Bring exchange ticket and passport to JR station to receive your pass.

Seishun-18 tickets.
This is also flat-rate train ticket for JR network and incredibly cheap. Its price is ¥11850 or $103 and you can purchase from any JR station in Japan.
Seishun means "Youth" in Japanese. But not to worry, it can be purchased by anybody.
*The price may change over years.
The Seishun ticket is separated for 5 tickets and sold as 1 package.
(Cannot be sold separately.)
So, you can use it for 5 days, and doesn't have to be 5 days in a row.
Limited Sales.
This ticket is only available during long holidays in Japan.
Spring
Purchase available: 20th Feb to 31st Mar.
Validity period: 1st Mar to 10th Apr.
Summer
Purchase available: 1st Jul to 31st Aug.
Validity period: 20th Jul to 10th Sep.
Winter
Purchase available: 1st Dec to 10th Jan.
Validity period: 10th Dec to 20th Jan.
Important:
1. This ticket cannot be used for Shinkansen (bullet trains).
